In this course you can learn about the game engine 'Bitsy' and familiarise yourself with it. Bitsy is suitable for telling stories with text and graphics.
In this course, you can work on more in-depth aspects of game design and game making.

Welcome!
Welcome to the self-study course for the game engine 'Bitsy'. Here you can learn the basic functions of the engine, turn them into your own little game, and find inspiration and resources for further use. The forum in the welcome area can be used for exchange between users. Suggestions for improvement and wishes can also be made here to make the course even better for other users.
Notes on the workflow
First, work your way through the "Getting Started" section. There you will find a lesson introducing the most important functions of Bitsy.
To view other areas, the lesson must be completed and the sample file downloaded. To be able to upload your own game, the text file and the feedback activity in the "Your first game" area must be completed. Also the section with the selection of games from itch.io and the section for additional materials must be marked as completed (top right/bottom left, depending on the device). With the feedback you help to improve this course!
After that, links for more advanced materials that you can use to expand your game will be available to you.
With the To-Do list in the sidebar, you can keep track of which activities you still need to complete. You don't necessarily have to complete every activity. However, to access each section, the feedback is mandatory.

What is Bitsy?
Bitsy is a browser-based game engine suitable for designing small games quickly without much effort or prior knowledge and publishing them in HTML format.
What can I use Bitsy for?
Bitsy can be used to create simple games, stories and small works of art. The engine is suitable in game development for quickly creating prototypes for game ideas, or in teaching-learning scenarios, e.g. for cultural and literary education. Due to its simplicity, Bitsy can also teach some basic aspects of programming and thus create interest and lower inhibitions regarding the use more complex programming environments.
Introduction:
The goal of this section is to familiarize yourself with the basic functions of the engine and create a small template that can serve as a starting point for your own projects.
First open https://make.bitsy.org/
You can change the language via the menu bar "tools" -> "settings" if need be. After that you can work through the lessons in this section.

General
In this section and on the "How do I even get started?!" page, there are some tips on how to design and plan games and a few Bitsy games for inspiration. On itch.io you can find dozens of games created with Bitsy.
The sample file is a good starting point to see the functions of the engine in action. This is a good way to test the knowledge acquired in the lesson. The more you understand the basic functions, the better you can imagine how other games were realised in terms of the process.
In the context of Bitsy, the most important thing is certainly the following:
Telling a short story with text and graphics and using game mechanics (picking up items, locked doors...) to add complexity to the story at the game level.

Inspiration on itch.io
The best way to get inspiration for your own project is to play other Bitsy games. There is a large community on itch.io that is happy to share their own creations. Here you can see the variety and creativity that can go into the creation of a game, despite the limitations of the engine. From art to role-playing games to gripping stories, everything is possible here!
